Alila hotels are known for their luxurious properties, high service standards and attention to detail. The brand’s newest outpost in the Napa Valley is no exception. With stunning architecture and interiors, this hotel delivers on its promise of a sophisticated experience. From the minute you walk through the front door, you can see that every aspect has been carefully considered and every amenity has been meticulously planned. The result is a property that surpasses your expectations from the moment you arrive and continues to amaze you throughout your stay. We spent four nights at Alila in early October 2018 during peak grape harvest season, which meant we got to enjoy some amazing views of the vineyards from our room as well as delicious seasonal food throughout the property.

Awards and Recognition

Awards include Wine Spectator’s Wine Hotel of the Year, Wine Enthusiast’s Wine Country’s Best Hotel for a Vineyard View, Conde Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Top 10 Hotels, and TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence. The hotel was designed by the architectural team of Foster + Partners, whose portfolio includes the Gherkin building in London, the new Apple campus in Silicon Valley and the new Dubai airport. The rooms, which overlook the vineyards, were designed by the British textile designer Cassette. The spa, which is located in a separate building, was designed by the world-renowned architect and designer Thomas Heatherwick.

Best season to visit

  • Peak Season: Late September to late October - For grape harvesting season, the weather is still warm enough to enjoy outdoor activities but not so hot that you need to stay indoors.
  • Off Season: Late November to late February - If you like the idea of going when it’s quiet, if you can’t stand the smell of grape or don’t want to be surrounded by tourists, this is the best time for you to visit.
  • Spring - March to May - This is the ideal time to visit the Napa Valley. The weather is perfect for vineyard hopping, hiking, biking and other outdoor activities.

Location

The hotel is located in Napa’s Silverado wine region, about a 15-minute drive from Napa’s city center. Silverado is a small town that has largely been spared from the rapid development that has overtaken Napa. The Silverado Trail, a road that links Napa Valley to the coastal town of Monterey, runs right past the hotel. The trail is known for its wide variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking, zip lining and horseback riding. Silverado is located approximately 45 minutes from the San Francisco Airport and an hour from the Oakland Airport.

Dining

The hotel’s farm-to-table restaurant is helmed by Chef Jason Bangerter, whose cuisine has been called “bold and beautiful”. The menu changes seasonally to showcase the very best produce from the Napa Valley as well as seafood from the nearby Pacific Ocean. We happened to visit during a period when mushrooms were in season, so you could find them on the menu in multiple ways. We found the food here to be absolutely stunning, and its rustic, hearty style is very well suited to the Napa Valley setting. The restaurant has a cozy, homey feel that is enhanced by the sound of the wood fire oven.

Pros and Cons

Pros: The Alila offers a great location in the centre of the city and is a stylish place to stay.

Cons: The Alila is quite expensive.
